Why We Exist

"You don't just need a house in a city;
you need people."

Calgary Chai Party was born from a simple truth — that a warm cup of chai and a circle of genuine people can change everything about how a new city feels like home.

A person who built belonging from scratch

Demi Balhara moved from India to Calgary in 2021, full of optimism and ready to build a new life. She found a great apartment, a job she loved, and a city that felt full of possibility.

But something was missing. Diwali came and went quietly. Her birthday passed with a handful of people who barely knew her. She had colleagues, neighbors, and acquaintances — but not the kind of friends who would show up at 2am if she needed them. Not yet, anyway.

"I realized I wasn't the only one. Almost everyone I met was going through the exact same thing — talented, warm people who just needed a space where real connections could happen."

In late 2025, she created Calgary Chai Party — an invitation-only gathering where newcomers, immigrants, and anyone building life in Calgary could show up as themselves. No networking pitches. No awkward small talk. Just people, chai, and guided conversations designed to go deeper, faster.

The first event had 18 people. By the end of the evening, there were 3 WhatsApp groups and plans for a weekend hike. That was all the proof Demi needed.

Today, Calgary Chai Party has over 100 members — and growing. Every gathering is small and intentional, and every cup of chai carries the same simple promise: you belong here.

Our Mission

Four pillars we build on

Everything we do comes back to these four principles. They shape how we vet members, run events, and show up for each other.

Authentic Connection

We reject surface-level networking. Every gathering is designed to go beyond names and job titles — we talk about what really matters: family, home, identity, belonging. We want you to leave with friends, not business cards.

Lived Experience

Everyone in the room has navigated something hard — a new country, a new culture, a new chapter of life. We honor that lived experience. Our conversations are grounded in real stories, not polished personas. Vulnerability is welcome here.

Collective Growth

We grow together. Member insights, local knowledge, and community wisdom are shared freely — from navigating PR paperwork to finding the best chai spot in NW Calgary. We're better collectively than we are alone.

Belonging

The ultimate goal: that you feel like you truly belong in Calgary. Not just as a resident but as someone with roots, with people, with a place in the story of this city. You are welcome here — completely, authentically, as you are.

The Format

How every gathering works

Intentional, intimate, and warm. No awkward forced mixing — just a carefully designed evening that makes real connection easy.

  • 1
    Invitation-only entry

You apply, we review, and if it's a good fit we send a personal invitation. This protects the warmth and safety of the space for everyone.

  • 2
    Small & Intimate

Small enough that everyone gets heard. Large enough that you'll meet a variety of people. Every person in the room has space to speak.

  • 3
    Guided conversation rounds

We facilitate — not control — the conversation. Warm icebreakers, rotating table topics, and open time. Think dinner party energy, not workshop energy.

  • 4
    Monthly gatherings

Events happen once a month in different parts of Calgary — NW, SW, SE, NE — so it's accessible no matter where you live.

  • 5
    Chai & light refreshments

Masala chai, light bites, and a warm space. The fee you pay covers the venue and refreshments — nothing more.

How We Show Up

Community guidelines

These aren't rules imposed from above — they're values we hold collectively. Every member agrees to them.

🛡️

Safe & Confidential

What is shared in the space stays in the space. Members are trusted to keep each other's stories private. We do not share member information or event details publicly.

💛

Respectful Always

Every background, religion, language, and perspective is respected. We listen before we respond. We assume good intent and extend grace to everyone in the room.

🌍

Radically Inclusive

Calgary Chai Party is open to everyone building life here — not just South Asians. Newcomers, long-term residents, any background. The only requirement: genuine openness to connection.

🚫

No Pitching

This is not a networking event. We ask that members refrain from business pitches, multi-level marketing, or using the community for self-promotion. Come to connect, not to sell.

🤲

Show Up Fully

If you RSVP, please attend. If you can't make it, let us know so your spot can go to someone on the waitlist. Ghosting affects real people who were looking forward to meeting you.

Be Yourself

No performance required. You don't need to have your life figured out. You don't need to impress anyone. Come as you are — that's the whole point.

Questions

Frequently asked

Everything you need to know before applying. Still have questions? Email us.

Not at all. Calgary Chai Party is for anyone who is building their life in Calgary — regardless of where you're from, your background, your culture, or how long you've been here. The chai is South Asian-inspired, but the community is wide open. The only requirement is genuine openness to meeting new people.

Pricing is shared only after your application is accepted. The fee is kept intentionally accessible and covers the cost of the venue and chai/refreshments — we don't profit from gatherings. Children under 15 attend free (you must declare them in advance when RSVP'ing).

We have limited spots at each gathering to keep the experience intimate, so not everyone can come to the very first event they apply for. If you don't get in this round, you automatically stay on the list for future events. We do our best to accommodate everyone over time, and your application is never discarded.

Yes — families are very welcome. Children under 15 attend for free. We do ask that you declare children in your RSVP in advance so we can plan accordingly (seating, snacks, space). The venue is always chosen with family-friendliness in mind.

Full membership happens naturally: (1) Apply using the form on our site, (2) get accepted and receive an event invitation, (3) attend an event, and (4) you'll receive access to the member portal — our private forum, member directory, and announcements. There's no separate membership sign-up form.

Yes — it's genuinely invitation-only and there is a human review of every application. We're not looking for perfect people; we're looking for warm ones. The questions in the application help us understand your story and your intention. We don't discriminate on any protected ground — we're simply building a community with care and intentionality.

Ready to belong?
