I moved to Calgary in September 2024 with two suitcases and a job offer. I knew exactly zero people. My colleagues were friendly but distant — the kind of people you have lunch with, not the kind who show up when you're sick or homesick.
Diwali came and I celebrated it alone in my apartment with a YouTube livestream. I cried a little. I thought — is this what building a life here really looks like?
Then I found Calgary Chai Party through a Facebook post. I almost didn't apply — it felt too personal, too vulnerable. But I did, and I got in for the February gathering. I was so nervous I almost cancelled the morning of.
By the second hour, I had exchanged numbers with three people and been invited to a weekend hike the following Sunday. Six months later, I have a group chat I open every morning. One of those women helped me move apartments. Another brought me food when I had COVID.
That's not nothing. That's everything when you're building from scratch.
